He's been nicknamed "God's Rottweiler", was a member of the Hitler Youth, fought briefly for the Nazis in WWII, has called homosexuality an "intrinsic moral evil" -- and he's the new leader of the Catholic Church.

Cardinal Josef Ratzinger, a hardline right-winger from Germany, has been named the successor to Pope John Paul II, and will take the name Benedict XVI. GLBT groups worldwide are devastated at the announcement.

Ratzinger has been one of the most powerful men in the Vatican, and was Pope John Paul II's chief theological adviser for the past 20 years. During his time there, he authored the 1986 letter "On the Pastoral Care of Homosexual Person" which led to GLBT support groups being ejected from church premises and clergy being censured for reaching out to GLBT parishioners.
